Beacon of Light
Like many of you, the events from last week still weigh heavily in my mind and heart. The assassination of Charlie Kirk was a tragedy in so many ways; notwithstanding the loss of a husband, father, patriot, and Christian man, we have lost a symbol of hope, free speech, and the courage to stand for truth and Jesus Christ in the midst of opposition. Also like me, you may feel a sense of anger and grief in pondering these events. What can we do to stand in the face of evil? For me, the assassination of Charlie Kirk spotlights the importance of education, particularly a classical and Christian education like the one we are trying to grow at White Horse Academy.
A classical education is unique in that it emphasizes socratic dialogue and the open examination of ideas, even from those whom we may disagree with. It is a model that resists the growing cultural push toward silence and secularism. We need more of this in our world. As Charlie stated a few years back, "When people stop talking, really bad stuff starts. When marriages stop talking, divorce happens. When civilizations stop talking, civil war ensues. When you stop having a human connection with someone you disagree with, it becomes a lot easier to want to commit violence against that group… What we as a culture have to get back to is being able to have a reasonable disagreement where violence is not an option."
It is clear we live in a society where the main educational model pushes a secular worldview against the Lordship of Christ. What may have once began as a project to find truth without God has become an attempt to silence the truth when spoken. Only one man fired the bullet but we are seeing the fruit of generations of ideas which are trying to tear down a Christian and free society.
You and I may not have a platform like Charlie Kirk but we all have an opportunity to be one small, beacon of light in a dark world. Let us continue in our mission to raise faithful Christian, cultural leaders.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
